I've used a Zoom H4n to record digital audio to go along with digital video from a Nikon HDSLR. Its called double system audio in the film industry. I synchronize them in Final Cut Pro X but you can do this with most decent video editing software. "Slating" both camera & DAR at the top of the recording helps the s/w match files effectively.

I'm sure you can use the Zoom H4n to record performance audio using the x/y configure mics. I plan on using it this summer when I attend a songwriting camp.

You said you can plug the Zoom H4n into your iPhone or iPad in the original post but I've never done that so can't comment on that use.
