I had the same thing for a long time, but my desk isn't as wide as yours and it was a little unstable (as realized during a minor earthquake!) My speakers are also a good bit larger than a standard studio monitor (B&W 8" two way about 10 by 10 by 18 and 20 lbs) so they need something solid!
It's important to get the tweeters at ear level, and I made some small stands for the desktop version like yours to achieve that, but when B&H had a sale on these at 35 shipped and I went back to them.
