I haven't really been much of a fan of the 500. IIRC, the infield road course was created when F1 began racing there, utilizing a part of the oval to create the complete track. And, F1 ran it CW compared to Indy running the course CCW.
As to all the mistakes and other stuff you brought up, that's what Americans like to see, I think.
