It is a 20 gauge shell. We pierce the end of shell by hammering in a metal tube right through the center. This allows the powder to travel down to the pencil lines that we had already drawn on the peghead. Then with a Bic lighter, we ignite the gunpowder, and voila!, a perfect pocket for the pearl to sit in.
Edit: I’m being told that for legal reasons I have to disavow the previous explanation and just say that Steve is holding a very fine 1/16” chisel. He’s cleaning up the walls of the pockets he has already routed into the peghead. The bulk of the chisel handle is out of frame.
