Meanwhile, I bombarded Nick with ideas, sketches, questions and suggestions — all while the poor guy was busy building guitars.
Nick is an incredibly patient person, his responses were alway very considered. His manner reminded me of my experience in art school. In studio class the better instructors could look at a work in progress, find what was working in it (and what wasn’t) and then through questions and comments, a direction for improving would emerge for the student. In our exchanges, Nick somehow enabled me to better develop my own ideas, and between the two of us we refined the designs.

This is not to say that every idea I had was a good one. Ocassionally Nick would have to put his foot down: “Please don’t make me put that on a guitar!”
