I am most comfortable with a strap, too. I try to go for a position that puts each arm at a sturdy right angle at the elbow, the guitar being a more diagonal than horizontal. That said, everyone’s different. I just encourage my students to find a way to hold it that makes sense for their body, guitar-size, and playing style. Do what makes sense for you, not just what’s conventional or cool.
