I can believe that. He strikes me in that time period as a guy who would play with the thought in his head, "If I play really cool, the chicks will like me!"

That's the interesting thing about theory: You could use it to describe all the interesting relationships that a composer brought into his work and you could be quite accurate because all that stuff does, in fact exist in the music. But there's that odd chance that if confronted with your analysis the composer might say, "Oh, I didn't know all that stuff. I just wrote a pretty melody that was in my head. I'm glad you like it, though."
