I am put off by an overly oppressive banjo in some bluegrass songs. The banjo is like medicine. A little is good. Too much can kill you/the song. McCoury (in the songs I’ve listened to) seems to highlight the fiddle and to a lesser extent the mandolin much more than the banjo. That “mix” won me over.
I love bluegrass, but really dislike the sound of a banjo (all my musician buddies give me a bunch of grief over this). About 99.9% of all bluegrass banjo players play Scruggs style and it's a sound that feels like icepicks in my ears. Several years ago I discovered Don Reno style banjo and it sounds much different, for lack of a better description it sounds like rock 'n roll banjo and is much more pleasing to my ear. If I hear Reno style banjo, my ears really perk up. Claw hammer is nice too.
