Yes, the rosette stiffens the sound hole lip, and also serves to seal the end grain. I try to bury it 4/5ths of the way through the top, or a little more. I’d go for 9/10ths, but when I put it in I do not yet know the thickness of the top, and would not like to actually end up having penetrated.
