At the time, Jimi was pretty much unknown in the US despite having had successes in the UK. Basically, the guys in the Monkees heard Hendrix play, and decided this guy is great, we gotta get him some exposure over here, and they made their management book him as an opening act on their upcoming tour.
Good intentions on their part . . . but yeah, it turned out the Monkees demographic was not the Jimi Hendrix Experience demographic
