The old steel needles were often used repeatedly and, yes, after a while the y blunted and tore though the records.

That was pre-electric gramophones/phonographs whatever.
Then from at latest the '60s we had electric record decks with magnetic cartridges with a diamond or whatever "stylus"
You had one for 33 & 45 and another for 78s (i.e. old 12" records).
This is all from old memory and dates /details migt be a little wrong.
