I modified the trimmer mount. There was a protrusion inside the carriage assembly designed for I have no idea. I broke out my Dremel, installed the sanding wheel and ground it off. Now the trimmer descends further down and I can now route deep enough to do a binding strip.
My first test on a square and straight-edged blank showed good results. Getting used to a curved edge with a radius on the top will take more practice.
