You wouldn't need to change the URLs manually in order to change over to HTTPS. Most web hosting services make this painless. For hardcoded URLs there are simple tools available to make this change en masse in any decent CMS (content management system.) Regarding forum history, that content is still there. You'd just be routing that newly-secure traffic to the updated address, so http links will automatically redirect to https. Your web host should be able to help you, should you decide to go that way.
