I don't know how easy they would be to find in the UK, whats left of it now, or Europe in general...but...a late 60's to early 70's Yamaha FG-180 would get you extremely close to vintage Martin D-28 tone, and give you a super durable instrument as well. The old Swedish Levin dreadnaughts of that same era, which used to be more common in Europe, not sure about now, would also work really really well.
