In my experience, anything that drew undue attention to anyone on the platform was frowned upon - really as a reminder that the congregation was not there to see us.
I, too, recall a pink shred machine showing up one Sunday - we never saw it again. Also, when I got my Rickenbacker 650D, it had the stock mirror shiny pickguard on it - first time I played it in church, I was very aware that as I moved about, the lights were reflecting off it into the front rows, causing quite a distraction. I changed it out for a gold plastic one very soon afterwards...
It's also completely unacceptable to show up with anything other than a Taylor or a McPherson, if you happen to be playing acoustic.
