Default D# is a good middle ground...

I find this a good compromise between playability and being buzz free. With a good setup and light gauge strings (10-47), dropping a full tone elicits fret buzz when played firmly.

D# also seems to produce more bottom end without losing the treble sparkle. Down at D, light gauge strings lose quite a bit of tone.

Worth experimenting with all options to see what suits you and your instrument best.
