Before and after pics of my little project. I was able to remove 2mm of paint & wood with only a sharp chisel and the patience of a retiree with nothing else to do
I scored the paint in the recess before I began work with the chisel. The result is the pickup now sits @ 2mm lower in the body and I have what I think is proper clearance between the strings and the pickup itself.
