I built a set of sides where I used a kerfed lining and the regular process of doing a double side gluing the inner to the outer layer I glued the second layer to the inside of the lining. So a boxed construction. It was so stiff I could stand on it. The thing that concerned me on building that way is future side repairs might be harder. Might revisit it yet.
