Like my daughter's iPhone, it would need to be charged. The latest electronics that is embedded in Lithium battery packs will make sure the cells are not reverse charged or damaged in any other way. All that fancy charge and discharge protection is multiply and incompatibly sourced by various semiconductor manufacturers guaranteeing that unless you own a mass market PC, there will never be a generic replacement battery. And the day Bose gives up making them you're screwed (that is if you actually use the battery and run out it's 300 or so discharge lifetime, or get unlucky and it fails some other way).
