You are right. A stripped truss rod or a broken nut makes sense; a “broken” truss rod doesn’t. How could a steel rod break anywhere other than at the ends (stripped threads or broken nut)?
You're right, I should have gotten a second opinion. I'm going to pick it up a little later and find out exactly what the deal was.
