I'd guess that the original Martin has a neck block essentially the same as the front 3 or 4 inches of the block Burton has constructed, other than the Martin probably has a dovetail joint. The sides were then bent and glued to the block, and in that transition area the sides are not perpendicular to the top or back, but warp into the taper of the neck heel.
