The 40's also have some cosmetic "vintage" appointments like the squared headstock, open gear tuners, and diamond fretboard inlays. After having the 03 series stay mainly the same for a looooong time, it was a nice way to freshen up their look and sound.
Great comment about the custom runs... my first 40 series was a brand new limited edition with figured mahogany (normally an expensive upgrade) and it cost LESS than an identical standard guitar. I think I've seen a few gloss tops with walnut back/sides floating around out there.
