You can glue the hardwood strip in with Titebond Original, which is just as reversible as hot hide glue. 5/8" wide by 1/16" thick is a good size.

Exactly the size pieces of wood that I have. Can you explain what you mean by using brads to center the patch? Would I measure the distance between the outer holes on the bridge, mark that on my patch, put the brads through the patch, align the patch with glue and then pull the brads out through the bridge?
