Strap always whether guitar or mandolin. I am a hobby player and have massive sleep apnea. It is not at all unusual for me to fall asleep between the chorus and bridge, only to pick up again when I wake up 15 minutes later. Saves a lot of money or repair bills for dropped insturments. Needless to say I also never drive a car any more. sigh.
