I wondered the same, Carey. I'm still not certain, but I've been they're not one and the same. The 8-string Schmidt Bach recording is truly wonderful.
Okay, according to Wiki, the 8-stringer, whose name is
Stephan, resides in Switzerland. He seems to keep a (regrettably) low profile. The teacher Stefan has coached such players as Nadja Kankovich, Jessica Kaiser, Isabela Selder.
