I'll second that as well. The written bonus material takes the basic exercises and songs one or two steps further, with slightly more challenging stuff. Working through them succesfully will help you a
lot as you move on through the course. Plus the bonus material is where Steve outlines the criteria you need to meet before moving on to the next session, so in that regard it's extremely useful. Without those kinds of benchmarks as a reference, it can be difficult to get the most out of any self-directed course of learning.
