Fairbanks F-40 **SOLD**
Next up! This is a really cool and awesome sounding guitar from a builder who gets - deservedly - much love on these pages. The Fairbanks F-40 is a J-185 with a couple of notable upgrades. This one has torrified top, b&s AND neck, so basically the whole thing. It's been played quite a bit for a guitar so young and has the usual collection of top indents and squiggles to show for it. Back has 2 pencil point indents, and that's it. Tone is vintage Gibson, really present, crisp and punchy but not bright, with more sustain than you'd expect from a maple guitar. Adi top is about as wide-grained as I've ever seen, and from the torrifaction process the wood is burnished to a honey color and the whole thing has this translucent shimmer. Neck is 1 3/4 with a deep C. It's chunky and I wish I had it on all my guitars. My hands are average size and it's really easy to control. Guitar is perfectly set up and plays fast & easy.
For reference, the same guitar acouple of serial numbers removed. Identical tone: https://thenorthamericanguitar.com/p...ple-red-spruce The specs: Built April, 2016 Highly figured maple b&s Adi top Neck - Mahogany w/ ebony h/s Fretboard - Madagascar w/ parallelograms Tuners - Period-correct Kluson gold w/ pearloid buttons 16" lower bout 1 3/4 nut 2 5/32 string spacing 24.625" scale length 4 3/4 depth at tail $3650 (4/12) Some preliminary pix: https://i.postimg.cc/v8Jtr5Lk/fairbanks-front.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Hs0XbRL8/fairbanks-back.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/wvKjfxfq/fairba...tock-front.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/d1vKZhNy/fairbanks-label.jpg |
This one says custom on label - I’m thinking from the torrifaction- so there’s that....
|
Wow
Man, Robert, each one you post is better than the previous!
|
Thank you, Jeff! This is not your overbuilt maple of yesteryear. It's light, with a thinner top. You get that maple crispness with a little more depth to it. And for guys who don't like a "white" guitar, this is not that!

Gorgeous! If I didn’t have a vintage J-185, I’d be all over this. Gibson’s best acoustic model, if you ask me.
Someone will be lucky! |

I've been asked about trades (naturally) and wouldn't be opposed to at least discussing if you've got a cool small-bodied, preferably slothead, sunburst....I don't think I'm asking too much....:) |
Full shot of guitar w/ case plus pic of perfect break angle. Two additional saddles Dale made for this guitar are in case pocket. One on guitar is the middle of the three:

Hi I love the way Fairbanks guitars sound.
I have a Petros FS for sale or trade on AGF. I think your in NJ, I'm in Phila area. If you would be interested in a trade we are close enough to try each guitar. I'm basically looking for a short scale 14 fret ooo possible cutaway, but the Fairbanks tone has my interest. Let me know, Thanks. |
Final Four discount, price lowered to $3900. Willing to listen to respectful offers. You don't find this model Fairbanks on every street corner....
|
Beautiful early spring Sunday bump for you maple lovers....
|
This one gives you that nice dry crispness and click under your fingernails that you only get from maple....
|
Will try a little harder - price dropped to $3650 for this absolutely killer piece of Gibson-y vintageness.
|
Wow.... Fairbanks is one of the best.. I should know, I have one... Would love to have another..
