Florentine Cutaway..yay or nay?

Played a Taylor 614ce V-braced guitar the other day. It sounded sweet - but it had the Florentine cutaway. I just can’t get excited about it. Thoughts?

Have to agree. Pointy things belong on electric guitars, graceful lines on acoustics. It's a law I think.

The Florentine cutaway is really different. IMO the sound of the guitar should be the determining factor. Personally I like the design.

Looks good on an archtop!

I kind of like it on this used Epiphone PR-5E/VS I just picked up today.

It depends on the guitar. For example a Somogyi in my opinion would look strange if it had a Venetian cutaway as because you can't away that you always see on one is a florentine cutaway. On the other hand in my views Traugott would look out of place with a florentine cutaway.

There are "florentine" and "florentine" cut aways. The one shown doesn't do it for me. However, the florentine on my Charis is not as pronounced and, I feel, it's gorgeous. Of course, at the end of it all, I couldn't care less about a cut out or not. If the guitar is spectacular, it's spectacular.

I LOVE Florentine cutaways! I think they are the first ones I ever saw; certainly the first ones I really noticed... the look of a Gibson ES-175 is iconic, in my mind... (and the 175 is pretty close to a "Grand Concert" size/shape)

When I had Mark Angus build me my #35 in 1979, I specifically requested a Florentine cutaway... when I had James and Luke Goodall build me my Goodall Grand Concert, I wanted a Florentine cutaway, but James balked at that, so went with a Venetian cutaway that he was more comfortable doing.

I'm okay with either, but I prefer a Florentine... except on a dreadnought... I don't believe I've ever seen an uglier guitar than a dreadnought with a cutaway... as sexy and wonderful as Florentine cutaways look on a more "concert" shaped instrument, they just look far out of place on a dreadnought... my opinion, that's all...

Ditto that.

I believe this is the general consensus on the AGF.

As to F-cuts, it depends on the particular instrument, but I tend to prefer those to be on the electric side, such as the venerable ES-175.

It looks fine to me.

Here's what my cutaway looks like, sort of the way Taylor does their normal cutaways...
