Setting up for Finish

I'm in the final stages before finish on the Maple Josie small jumbo. I added a Cocobolo bound sound port and an inlay on the back of the neck. The inlay is in the same woods and look of the rosette and headstock overlay:

So all that remains is setting up the truss rod cover and a little more clean up but, here is what it looks like before finish:

Can't wait to see the figure and color explode when the finish hits!

Thanks for viewing!

Stunning work, Mark, from top to bottom!

Your thematic and wood palette choices are just awesome.

Very tasteful neck inlay as well--thanks for sharing!

Thanks for commenting Nemoman. I have a number of various burl woods here that will take on different colors under finish. So you might say it ain't over 'til the finish! :)

Wow! Mark, that is gorgeous. Just love your sense of design. What wood is the fretboard? Really like it.

AcousticDreams 05-18-2018 08:50 PM

Absolutely- beyond fantastic...everything about it..the Headstock design....the contrast in the binding...everything is perfect!!!
And...I would love to give you a super compliment on that gorgeous and practical guitar stand. I was going to make a nice wood stand...and kind of gave up because I felt like all the designs I was coming up with were not quite as protective as my Starfish stand. But after eyeing yours...I may have to do a little coping of that...Love that yours has back support and cradles the bottom as well. I love beauty...but form, function and most importantly...safety comes first. Kudos on a great design!

Thanks virob, the fretboard is Cocobolo. I like the wave pattern on it which went right along with the design of this guitar. I still have a couple more cut from the same billet.

Thanks Knives&Guitars, I made that guitar stand because I was showing at an art gallery where the public wouldn't be able to touch the guitar. Also, the guitar was up on a little bit of a rise but, I was afraid it would be easily bumped. So I had a mission. The base of the stand is actually a commercial grade motorized rotating wedding cake display turntable (phew! that was a mouthful!). It can hold 200lbs, dead quiet, and variable speed. So the spot light reflections play off the moving curves of the guitar and I tried to get the support away from the guitar so the back can be seen. Most importantly the turning motion says, "Here I am, here I am, don't bump into me!". I might add that the gallery staff said that little bit of motion acted like a magnet for people walking into the gallery.
There are other free standing set ups similar to this and they usually have a spread leg tripod set up that seems pretty stable as long as someone isn't kicking the legs.
By the way, it's cool you're making knives! I take a lot of my design inspiration from knife makers. Collectable knives is a truly fascinating world full of a lot of very talented artists and craftspeople.

Thanks for commenting! Mark

Another beautiful instrument, Mark. I’m loving the details, especially the inlay on the back of the neck.

Best,
Jayne

Thank you Jayne. The back inlay was a fun little addition to do!

Absolutely gorgeous Mark, as expected.
Initially I was thinking the fretboard was a little too dark for the rest of the guitar, but I know the guitar will darken up under finish. Can't wait to see it all together!

Good Golly!

Holy Cow, Mark! That is beyond ... outstanding! And to imagine it rotating in the spotlight! Woohoo. What a crowd magnet!

I am seeing a lot of figured Maple lately. In fact my incoming John Kinnaird is monster tone Cedar/figured maple. Planets converge as Rosewood goes nuts...

What a beauty you have added to the world! Way to go.

Paul

Whoa! Pretty amazing Mark! Going to look even more amazing finished with that maple. Great choices. Incredible looking guitar.

Thanks Zandit75! Yeah, the problem with photography is it doesn't have the dynamic range for exposure that we think we have with our vision. So when you photograph something like Cocobolo on unfinished Maple you choose between exposing for the Maple or exposing for the Cocobolo or average it and get them both wrong. Now you can somewhat compensate for that after taking the picture but, then you will be "altering" the photograph. I really think it is a big bad joke that an "unaltered" photograph is what something "really" looks like. I could go on and on about this :)

Thanks Paul! Domestic woods have nothing to apologize for both in the looks and performance departments. I personally feel it's wonderful that the marketplace is starting to recognize this.
