The Gypsy

Here's a song that I learned a while ago for a band audition. The leader sent me a bunch of songs and this was one of them. (I didn't get the gig ;) ).. But I did like the song and stripped it down to perform it as solo acoustic.

In addition, if you can let me know your thoughts on the recording.. This is using 1 Large Diaphragm mic for recording guitar and vocals same time. The Mic is the Origin by Aston. Recorded with my Spire Studio and App..

Thanks polarred!

Yeah! It's got a little Southern Rock (Sweet home Alabama and Can't you see) ... feel to it ..

Very well done, Jake!

It sounds very good, very live sounding, very clean, and well balanced between guitar and vocal. That's an impressive sounding microphone and your performance is well done!

Wow thanks Glenn for your positive comments.

I just upgraded to this Aston mic from a budget Audio-Technica. I am really liking what I am hearing.. which is helping my performance.

Thanks again!

Sounds Really Good, Jake! I've heard good things about the British-made Aston mics, and they appear to be a real good value.

Hey KevWind!

Thank you for the reply and advice given to me over in the Record forum.

It's all beginning to make sense!

Appreciate the comments.
I am really working on quality of sound.

This track was recorded with 1 mic.. It is difficult to get the "right" mix.

Yes good news is with one mic you completely eliminate any possible phase issues (which definitely helps with clean)
The bad news is you can't EQ or Compress "separately" to carve out some difference between vocal and guitar. And sans any stereo effect to create stereo effect the sound tends be more center focused .

About all you can do is compress for more overall presence for both (then go back and make you sure you are still getting the balance between vocal and guitar that you want ) And you can EQ overall to clear low end mudd with a high pass filter try say somewhere between 50 to 90 hz .... and possibly (depending on the recording itself, and what your ears tell you) a slight low mid frequency cut (maybe 2 to 4 db) with a medium Q centered around 500hz

Sounds great and a perfect voice for this tune.
You should have gotten the gig.

It certainly is a process of trial and error.
1 Mic makes it a little easier/better!
I will make note of your second paragraph and try some of those EQ tweaks.
