Michael Greenfield Build
I had a semi holiday to London this winther, and I made sure to visit TNAG, twice. I played a lot of the guitars they had available. I have always heard great things about Greenfield's and when I got my hands on two of his guitars in the store, I was in love.
A couple of days ago, I couldn't resist it any more...I had to buy myself a Greenfield. I got the last 2018 spot TNAG had for 2018. I am mainly starting this thread to get a discussion flowing on some of the options. The guitar will be done like april/may 2019, and NGD photos will of course be posted. I have for now chosen:
Thoughts? Florentine cutaway, or not, that's the question... I am not sure about the other options. My kidney is up for sale. Here is a photo of one of the previous builds that used the 80 year old coco. https://i.imgur.com/XFWccq7l.jpg See this Facebook post about the wood, makes me giggle like a 3 year old https://i.imgur.com/snGwnbEl.jpg |
First off, congratulations...:)
Honestly, no one can possibly answer whether or not a cutaway is the way to go for YOU or not. It really depends on the type of music that you play and how often you need to play material above the 12th fret. I play chords and single lines above the 12th fret regularly hence I like a cutaway. For many players it is unnecessary. Have a chat with Michael. He can advise you. Quote:

Congrats, it would be hard to improve on those wood choices!!! You are living out the dream of many of us with this opportunity!
What blood type are you? I might have interest in that kidney! |
I would always go with a cutaway because I don’t want to be limited.
That cocobolo is gorgeous by the way. It has a nice purple hue to it. |
That sounds mighty fine. The Cocobolo looks brilliant!

Well, I agree. I think cutaway would be mainly about looks for me, to be honest. |
Hey it’s no cutaway for me...but I believe you can get a Greenfield with a nice bevel on the front bout?
That would be sweet... D |

Thanks! I have never checked my blood type, actually... let’s say it fits all. |
Wowza, nice Cocobolo

I have a G1 with the upper bout bevel and an elevated fret board. Upper fret access is easy. This combination is a good alternate to a cutaway if that is not your style.

Congratulations on the new Greenfield! You should sell part of your liver instead; that thing can regenerate itself. GLWS |

I actually thought most luthiers believed it didn’t affect tone a lot? Interesting! |

A cutaway may remove a few cubic inches from the body but if that resulted in a "lesser" guitar we would all want to play larger guitars. |
