Wood selection

Hey guys, I have some major problems!

A few days ago I went through my wood stash to find two back and side sets for my next guitars.

The first one was easy to find. It is going to be a Mod-D with a Swiss moon spruce top and wenge back and sides.

Here is a pic of the wenge set

But I can't decide what wood I should use for the second guitar!

It is going to be a 00 with this silky moon spruce top

What back and side wood of the following would you like to see in a build thread?

1. figured Muninga

2. figured Tasmanian Blackwood

3. silky Tasmanian Blackwood

4. figured European Walnut

All the woods look beautiful, Max, but I'll cast my vote for the figured European Walnut.

Awesome set--thanks, this should be fun to watch!

Easy. Figured blackwood rules! But I'm a bit biased, I don't know anything about muninga, and my limited experiences with walnut have left me not wanting to look any further.

You should mate it with a bunya top. :)

LouieAtienza 12-19-2017 03:33 PM

Max you're right... some tough choice there!

Truckjohn 12-19-2017 03:35 PM

Thats some pretty Walnut you have there. That gets my vote.

BrunoBlack 12-19-2017 04:51 PM

Man, these are all great, but I’d vote for - (2. figured Tasmanian Blackwood.) I imagine this will be impressive when it’s finished.

swilschke 12-19-2017 05:46 PM

The walnut is beautiful. Paired with that top, it will make a transcendent guitar.

The first set of Blackwood would be a stunner, it would be the easy choice for me. That being said the walnut would be the more interesting one to see come to fruition. Will it be the horse coming up from behind to steal the crown?

contrary vote

I'll vote for Muninga - only because I am not familiar with it and would like to learn more. Any of these will make a beautiful back and sides.

Owning a Austrian Walnut guitar and knowing the amazing sound characteristics of this wood, I can not help but give my biased vote for this Walnut. And visually this particular piece should prove to be nothing less than stunning, as not only does it have sapwood...but two shades of light and dark browns, plus some streaks. It should be a tone-fully delightful instrument upon completion in both its musical tones, and its several shades of tones-color.

I vote walnut. I'd love to hear what that guitar sounds like once complete. Beautiful wood.

Being an Aussie I should push for the blackwood, but actually I would really like to see a build thread with that great set of walnut....IMHO it is a very underrated wood.

Two guitars to build, two very simple selections.
Figured Tassie Blackwood, and Figured Walnut.
The rest are not even in the hunt!

The muninga has an excellent reputation as an instrument making wood in its country of origin. It's stable, sounds good, is a source of medicine for curing bl backwater fever, and is now a protected tree. Also known as kiaat. I vote for muninga. But that first set of Blackwood sure looks great, as does the walnut. Split vote.

redir 12-21-2017 07:22 AM

Ah wood pr0n, gotta love it.

I'm not crazy about that walnut to be honest but the rest of it all looks great. My vote if I really had to choose one, the Muninga.
