Per says the radius will be even greater after he shapes the braces. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sa21cbcfa.jpeg And the two back shots. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s4bb34d58.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sb424daba.jpeg Hope you like the update as much as I did. |
Can't remember if I posted this before, I know its Madagascar but is has such tight grain and color, it reminds me of wenge.
|
Yeah, it is the polar opposite of the two I have from Martin. Unusual to say the least. Here are the two Martin MRW.

I am literally addicted to the look of the 12 fret D21's back. My favorite look for Madi.
|
Well, it's definitely slab sawn…but I like it too. :)
I asked Per to see if there was any figured hog blanks for the neck for the 42 and he came up with this. It has a little figure in it, and I have seen the twin made from the same blank and like it. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s8d99ba1d.jpeg Hopefully, Per is working on the 45 back now. |
I am working on the D45 back. Glued braces today, It is in the glue press right now :) Earlier today I glued up Matthew's OM-28 back so tomorrow I'll have some pictures of both.

Some 45 bracing and back pics.
Low back brace stock with radius.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8876d998.jpg Tall and narrow #1-2 brace and low and wide #3-4. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc871b2d2.jpg Upper back brace. Love the figure on the top. This Alpine spruce bracing is from old stock that Per was fortunate enough to acquire from a Violin maker's Estate. He thinks it's about 50-60 years old. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4b61ba2e.jpg Laying out the back strip. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s445ffef7.jpeg Laying out the back braces. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s3040be77.jpeg Placed in the deck after applying HHG. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s3c4bd258.jpeg Glue dried with back radius inherent. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sc416d82c.jpeg And the money shot. Per will let the glue set up and harden before shaping the braces. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s37e09014.jpeg Thanks for the update Per! Looking forward to the next one as always.:) |
A couple more pics.
Per wiped some Mineral spirits on the backs to show the color in the wood. These backs were stored for a long time and had oxidized. They look much better with some color.
First the 42 back. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps28248207.jpg And the 45. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd33eb829.jpg Thanks for looking. |
Nice! Keep Em coming.
Edit: without discounting any other builder on the custom shop, as another with a concurrent Marklund build, I challenge anyone to find cleaner and more precise work than Per. It's looking like he's applied the hide glue with an electron microscope and shaped the braces with a laser. Marklund the Machine! |
Wow, those photos look great. Thanks for posting!
|
Great looking builds, and superb tonewoods.
|
Marklund the machine. I like that :ha:
I got some more of that nice quartered MRW incoming. Got the sides Yesterday but the postal service messed something up so I won't get the rest until Monday or Tuesday. Per |
Final shaping of the back braces
First the 42.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps50a5cae4.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps471e65ae.jpg The 45 http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc0589430.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3a1c0ba1.jpg On another note, Per has decided to use solid abalone strips vs. Ablam for the pearl trim on the 42 and 45. I look forward to seeing the rosettes and the tops soon. Thanks Per. |
D-45S rosette
Here is Per's career first 45 style rosette. If this one is any indication, many more should follow. Here it is before final scraping.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa15827a1.jpg And after. This is all solid pearl strip construction, like the old Pre-war Martins had, and presently, only the new Martin D-45A have. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdeccf8ba.jpg Here are some of the Green Abalone strips. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc067c24a.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps98de8f9f.jpg Looking forward to seeing the top bracing pics next on this one. Nice work Per! |
45S Top bracing
Here's the 45S top bracing pictures. All braces and bridge plate are tucked under the x brace like the Authentic line.
