I remember reading that Paul would often hum beautiful melodies and then someone would ask him what that was, and he'd not know. The guy was just blessed with a genius of a musical mind.

The story about 'Yesterday' has been covered plenty of times but is worth repeating - after the dream mentioned in the video, McCartney was absolutely certain that it was someone else's tune. He even went to George Martin asking what the song was. It took some convincing from Martin and the other Beatles before Sir Paul accepted that it was indeed his song after all!

Whenever I dreamed up a new song, I'd go to others and they'd say, "Oh, that's James Gang!" or "I played that to you the other day!" or "Whatever it is, put it to bed." LOL

In 2010 Rolling Stone magazine published a Special Edition "The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs".
It goes about revealing much information relative to the origins of these songs.
It also tells you who wrote what and there are a lot of interesting tidbits about the competitive nature of Lennon and McCarney in their quest to "out-write" each other.
I am fortunate to own this special edition. Fascinating stuff.

Nice post. Being a Beatles fan since 1964, I love this stuff. My first band at 12, we were convinced we were going to be the NEXT Beatles.

One of the things he didn't mention about Blackbird was the inspiration from Bach's Boureé counterpoint.

I always think of him (McCartney) as a musical genius, and I think part of it is the upbeat basis to most all the songs.
