The nut is bone, that was the result of a failed experiment. I wanted a much lighter color, say the color of golden Koa. Turns out that bone is difficult to stain lightly. There are pores within which soak up stain at a much greater degree, leaving your nice golden color riddled with darker little holes. To cover those, we kept going darker and darker, until you see the color as a uniform dark brown.
Put in its slot, we were pleasantly surprised with the look.
It's a keeper. Now the question: do we stain the saddle????
