Budget Microphones?

I did a search but when you include "Budget" well you get lost in a thousand threads..
Ok..Got the Zoom R8 for Xmas.. Looking for a Budget mic for recording
My idea of Budget mic around $100 +/-
I've got these:
Sennheiser E945
Blue Core 100
Shure SM57
Alto DVM5
beyerdynamic TG-V30d
Samson Q-Mic

But I understand a large Condenser mic would be better...
GC has an MXL V250 on sale ?

I was just recently looking for a "good" LDC for around $100.

I went with the Audio-Technica AT2035 .. New they go on sale for $129. But I found mine used $75.

I also looked at the AKG 220.. These seem to be popular too.

The AT2020 at $99 brand new gets great reviews for an very good entry level LDC.

If you could go up to around $200 instead your options for large diaphragm condensers improve drastically.

I agree that the options increase but in my experience the quality doesn't.

At $100, check out the AT 2020. You'll need 2 mics though if you want to be able to record in stereo - and if you stay with this, you will.

+1 on the AT2020.

I like the AT3035 even better if you can find a used one.

I agree the AT2020 is a good option in that price range. I have two of them. Here is a thread on Gearslutz where Doug Young compares the 2020's against some much more expensive options.

In general I think Audio Technica mics are a good value. If you decide to up your budget a bit the 4040 and 4033 are popular used options.

I am less knowledgable on small diaphragm options in this price range. Maybe something like the Se7? https://www.seelectronics.com/se7-mic/ Looks like a pair is $200 from Sweetwater, you could try em and easily return them if they don't work out.

For a first LD condenser in your price range I recommend 3U Audio CM1, either the Teal or the Black. You can find a lot more about them over at the Gearslutz forum.

All of the AT mics I have ever tried have been excellent for their price ranges, so it's hard to go wrong with AT.

Just as a FYI, the AT2020 is a very nice mic and gets very good reviews. It is NOT a large diaphragm condenser. The capsule size (16mm / 5/8") places it firmly as a mid-size condenser. The confusion abounds because it LOOKS like an LDC.

Here's a quick review:

Yep, i noticed that with the specs .63, most large seem to be in the .95-1.25 in my price range

I got the at2035 as a gift and I have a MXL 990. The AT2035 is mellower than the MXL imo, the MXL makes a decent recording though.

You might also look at the Sterling Audio ST151.

When I bought my MXL 770, I found a fair number of "best of" lists that included it.

CASD57 01-07-2019 07:21 AM

Thanks, Everyone... I ordered a AT2020
