on purchasing a classical
 

hi, still on the fence about which guitarr i would like to purchase. when i go to GC or Sam Ash; they all seem the same! i want a guitar a little less than "2 at the nut, electric,$500 range. i am a "chet , Doc kinda picker. thanks.

Are you looking specifically for a Classical, or just something with Nylon strings? Within the Nylon string category, you will find them subdivided into Classical, Flamenco, and Crossover.

If you are primarily a steel-string player, then perhaps a crossover (also called hybrid) might be more to your liking than a straight-up Classical. Crossover's typically have a 48mm nut, and a radiused fingerboard, where Classical guitars have a 50-52mm nut, and an almost flat fingerboard.

Can you be more specific as to what you want, or what style of music you intend to play on it?

i thought the crossover guitars were "1 7/8 which is too narrow. yes i play steel string .acoustic only. is a radius more finger friendly than a flat fretboard? then that is what i'm looking for.

Have you played a crossover with a 1-7/8" nut width and determined for yourself it is too narrow. If not Cordoba Fusion which comes with a pick up would suite you well. If you want a 2" nut width in the same price range with a pick up look at the Godin La Petrie line up.

hi; i have played the Cordoba Fusion a few times . it seems that sometimes i've played them in the store and they feel fine but other times i felt cramped.

If you’re nervous about the Córdoba Fusion series nut width, then take a look at the Córdoba GK Studio series. The nut width there is 50mm (1.96 in).

You’d have to go used though since the GK Studio starts in the $649 range. But that does include electronics.

A radius or flat fretboard is a matter of taste. I personally prefer flat, so I would advise you try both.

Ramirez 2CWE I believe had a 50mm nut. Not too many out there in the "in between" (52mm and 48mm) category.

It's unclear whether this is your first Nylon string, and whether you're trying to pick up Classical, or Flamenco after playing Chet style, or if you want to play Nylon string Chet style. That'll narrow down your choices.

If you want to learn Classical, 2" wide, flat, no cutaway.

If you want to play Flamenco, get a Flamenco. Quite different critters.

If you're adding a Nylon string to your Chet playing, you can try a Flamenco or a Crossover.

You can always add aftermarket electronics.
