Hi, I'm a newbie (been learning a little less than a month), and am learning this as one of my first songs...I am getting the chord changes up to speed, but can anyone suggest the best strumming pattern for this song. Apologies for having to ask, but my ablity to hear which pattern people use is not quite up to speed yet...

Personally I think it sounds better played without the capo at the 2nd. With the exception of the F#minor, it's not like the other chords are all that difficult to play. Haven't seen OCMS playing it close up enough to see how they're playing it, but when in doubt, do without the capo and play open chords. YMMV. Was anyone else besides me surprised to find out that's Wagon Wheel is a Dylan song?

OCMS Plays it capoed at the 2nd. I'm not sure you could still call it a Dylan song...They did use the Title but the lyrics have almost all been changed. Personally I play it G,D,Em,C,G,D,C without the capo. It just fits my voice better.

Also in the last verse it's "before the sun" not "fit for the sun"

Actually I think you could still call it a Dylan song. I've heard the Dylan version.

They changed the title, the Dylan version was entitled 'Rock Me Mama'.

They stole this song from Dylan. The chorus is exactly the same as his, the melody is most definitely the same as his. Basically they made up their own words for the verses.

Good on OCMS for pulling a 'Dylan' on Bob Dylan!

Your correct with the title and chorus. Don't know what I was thinking when I posted...A confused moment, I guess....lol Got it backwards. You may fine me for impaired posting:D

To each his own I guess, but an A is an A no matter where you play it and if the F# minor doesn't bother you, I think that's the way to go. We play acoustically (single mic) so I try to avoid the capo when possible since I think the guitar sounds better without it. Who're we kidding though, that song is really all about the fiddle and the tight harmonies, us flat pickers are just kind of window dressing. :D

I've seen OCMS countless times since around 2000 and they really do have WAY better songs than this one. In fact, most OCMS fans and probably OCMS Are sick to death of this one. Every show I go to has some drunk frat kid hollering 'Wagon Wheel' over and over and over. . . . Old Crow plays a wealth of old time and they are very accomplished song-writer's in their own right. This is their 'pop' song, if they had to have one.

Gosh, it went over like gangbusters at their Richmond show back a couple of months ago. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, I just think it's a fun song to play and sing.
