David Webber Dread - Adi/Ziricote
I have enjoyed all the postings for individual guitars, great resource/collection of information. Therefore I wanted to contribute my experiences in purchasing my commissioned David Webber Dreadnaught this spring/summer.
Build Spec’s Red Spruce top Ziricote B&S Lightly flamed 1 piece Mahogany neck Dovetailed neck joint Streaked Ebony headplate, fingerboard (bound), and bridge Ebony binding w/ flamed Koa B|W|B purfling Flamed Koa rosette & logo inlay Ebony tail wedge (no strap buttons) Ebony neck cap 25.4” scale Gotoh 510 "Cosmo Black" tuners Side fret markers only Ebony bridge pins Bone nut and saddle (non-compensated) 1 ¾” nut, 2 ¼” string spacing at bridge Polyester finish Clear pickguard Medium gauge strings David was very helpful and the overall process was extremely enjoyable. Build construction is very high, set-up and playability is superb and definitely what I would consider a modern sound. In particular, there is a sweet spot when lightly strummed, were the sound just jumps off the strings. Yet, it still has great headroom when attacked hard with a pick; a very nicely balanced guitar which sounds good with many different playing styles. David accepted this commission with the top and B&S sets being supplied by me. Enough with the written info, lets get to the pictures – http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psa730feb9.jpg Full frontal shot. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps9ce83efa.jpg Pictures do not do the top justice! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps69887714.jpg This Red Spruce top is iridescent, with light silking throughout. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psaf88306e.jpg The straight, parallel gain on the back was a big seller for me in choosing this set. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps9248bc68.jpg The sapwood stands out nicely. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps0504a88f.jpg There was some good quartered grain on this set, even the sapwood shows the medullar rays. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps480838a1.jpg The Mahogany neck is very well quartered. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psb76fd6d1.jpg Light flaming throughout the length of the neck, used a gloss finish. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ps02736b3a.jpg This headplate was a nice added visual bonus when I received the guitar. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...psfc0c62ae.jpg The streaked Ebony on the fretboard and bridge adds some visual interest to the guitar. Just a very nice build from a good luthier, kudo's to Mr. Webber. Thanks for viewing! |
It's a shame you didn't commission a pretty one.;)

Best thing of all, it plays as good as it looks:D |
David is a great guy and builds a guitar that represents one of the best values out there in a "one off" shop.
I've owned a couple dozen of his instruments over the years and there are a couple I really miss. It's been almost a year since I sold off my last one. I've got my first Webber 000-12 coming Monday, can't wait to give it a run. Glad you had a positive experience (wouldn't have expected anything else!) |
That is a beautiful guitar IBKuz, congratulations. :)
I played 4 Webbers two days ago and I was blown away by the quality of David's guitars, not to mention the clear tone and great playability. One that stood out for me was a "rectified" Engelman topped Sloped Dread, with Indian Rosewood. The round body in similar materials was awesome too with great note to note balance up the neck. His choice of materials is top notch too - I'm impressed. |

Hi Ian,
Wow, that is a beautiful guitar! And wonderful photos! Thanks for taking the time to post! And welcome to the forum! - Glenn |
Amazing. I have a ziricote Roundbody and it is truly a delight. I was puzzled by the Adirondack top until I saw that you provided the woods. That's not a wood that David normally builds with - but I'm glad you're pleased with the results!
He really does wonderful work. Definitely doesn't get the credit he deserves, but I think he actually likes it that way. Humble guy. Phenomenal guitars. |
After I received my Webber 00, I loved the feel and sound of it so much, I set about getting a round body. I wanted a Mahogany this time, and apparently, that is harder than it sounds - Sapele seems to be replacing it. But, David had some, and I was going to have it built, but noticed on the Guitar Emporium website that Robb had a Quilted Mahogony roundbody with the sharp cutawayy I wanted. In short, it's now coming my way:

The quilted Mahogany is really special, very nice!

Congrats on your new Webber
Adi/Ziricote is definately one of my favorite wood combos bro. Enjoy it in good health!

Both the mahogany RB and the ziricote dread in this thread are stunning though! David doesn't usually like flashy inlays, but his "let the woods speak for themselves" approach can look equally stunning when he builds with the more exotic and figured woods. Absolutely gorgeous. |
Love the Webbers photographed here. Congrats to their owners!
