the cutaway looks more venetian than florentine, or am I looking at it wrong? I guess I don't "grok" what is happening there ('shaped and glued"?)

You can see the markings on the form - "neck" "back" and "point". This is just the florentine "C" part of the cutaway. It will be joined to the side and to the neck after trimming. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/Sz...2013.43.01.jpg It might be more clear in this picture - although you have to look at it upside down to see how it will attach: http://lh4.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/Sz...2013.43.21.jpg Here's the cutaway on Volcano. You can see the piece between the point and the neck - that's what's being formed and glued (this is a double side being glued together) in the Wanderer pics: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/g...o/0709_cut.jpg |

This will add to tbondo's question, though, so I thought I'd go ahead and post a few more pics. The back with bracing and the name / serial plate attached: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S0...2016.55.35.jpg Closeup of the nameplate: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S0...2016.55.49.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S0...2017.10.47.jpg In this shot you can see the piece that makes the florentine cut that was being glued up in the previous post: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S0...2017.11.23.jpg Note that these are double sides. The quilted mahogany on the inside was a serendipitous find by Mike this past fall in a scraps and pieces pile at a wood supply shop. Perfect for the inner of the double sides for the "tree" outers! Thanks for watching! Phil |
it's coming together very, very nicely phil. can't wait for the next "hourly" post...

Some nice work in progress on the rosette and headstock overlay. The woods are Macassar Ebony (as are the bindings), "tree" quilted mahogany, and spalted maple. I think that burst of spalted maple on the headstock overlay is very striking!
The top is sinker cedar, from a swamp-sunk log. Thanks for looking! http://lh5.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S2...2017.34.19.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S2...2017.57.13.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S2...2017.36.34.jpg |
The rosette laid up and glued with purfling and soundhole binding...

pardon my question phil, but what is that "excess" wood on the waist of the guitar?

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_zGI_o4anong/S2...2017.34.19.jpg They will, of course, be trimmed off along with any other overlapping, then the top will be routered for the binding and purflings. I've seen these "ears" on other build threads. Phil |
