Can a piezo bar be too "hot"?

I bought a cheap piezo bar (wide format) from AliExpress for my Yamaha FG700.

First, I had it go into a Fishman preamp but it was clipping at maybe 2% of the gain which I thought was a bit crazy. Eventually I ended up wiring the piezo directly to the endpin jack - same issue. It goes from inaudible (is this a word?) to distorted clipping in maybe 10% gain.

Do I just need a better piezo bar at this point? I am asking because when I ordered from AliExpress, I ordered from 5 different sellers (the product itself looked identical across them all) and they all seem to have the same issue.
