David Byrne

Anyone catch David Byrne’s American Utopia on HBO? The production with Spike Lee is available for streaming. If you’re a fan, it’s a great watch.

I have it recording on my DVR tonight and planned to watch it this weekend.

If I find myself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife - we'll watch it.

Ok, I watched it last night, after posting my initial comment. Absolutely fantastic. I had seen a few performances already, including the two songs he did on SNL last year, but to see the entire who was simply brilliant. No wires, no equipment or stage risers. Just the people and their instruments. And what an amazing sounding band! Perfect for Byrne's world music vibe.

Spoiler alert: the Janelle Monáe protest cover towards the end was very powerful and moving, and the ending of the band breaking down the separation between them and the audience was a perfect ending (well, that and the bike ride). I like that it covered his long career appropriately with a couple of Talking Heads songs, some of his most well know solo tracks, and at least one from his excellent collaboration with St. Vincent.

The camera work was perfect, capturing the performance, along with all the stage movement, even from overhead, which is something you'd never see from the audience seats. This is a performance I can watch again, and David Byrne has likely leapt into my Top 5 artists that I've never seen perform live (he was already Top 10).

I saw the show while he was touring it, before the Broadway residency. It was magnificent then, and it's magnificent now. The recording and cinematography of the HBO film were outstanding and the show is just such a hopeful and innovative thing. I watched it last night and will watch it again many times, I suspect.

I agree, great comments PV and Neal. I’ve followed his career and have seen him live. My wife and I are fans and we really enjoyed the performance. He’s an interesting and creative person.

...I saw David Byrne about a year and a half ago....definitely one of the top three concerts I have ever witnessed....and I have seen many over the last fifty years....I’ve been a fan since the early Talking Heads days but the man just keeps taking it up a notch....
