Guitar Tonewood Themed Chess Board

This is a fun project I chose to take on since recently moving into a home with a garage!
It required tools (TAS) 1 table saw, 1 hand router, clamps, glue and other various digit removal devices.
So from StewMac I bought a flamed maple b/s kit, a bunch of ebony head veneer pieces, and some Abalone inlay.
I picked up some walnut and oak slats from the home depot.
And the planless work began!
Next steps are to complete the abalone inlay, flush route the edges, Contour route the edges and then level sanding then finish sanding process will start.
So far only one near catastrophe-

Yes absolutely, looks great. Just in time for the popular chess rush too.

Now... How about those chess pieces?

I need to convince my wife that I need a wood lathe. LOL
“Chess Rush” LOL. It’s a lot like black friday, only for mathematicians.
I bought some nice pieces for the one or two annual games I get to play.

Actually, chess is 'huge' again right now since the airing of The Queen's Gambit. Retailers were reporting that they couldn't keep chess sets in stock for the holidays.

Great job. I'm a huge fan of the game and have WAY too many chess sets including some pretty high-end stuff.

We always have two boards set up at our house - one with a running game my wife play making daily moves and another for fast games where we just want to sit down and play a couple.

Our slow play set. The set is an Imperial Collector Series with a 4.0" King, ebony and boxwood. Maple and burl elm board.

Thanks for checking it out. That green board is pretty. I’m already thinking about what to do next. I made a lot of really dumb mistakes. So I kinda want a do-over.

My friends and I have played occasionally for some time, however I did quite like the Queens Gambit! it made me realise how little I know about how to play chess.
That’s great you’re wife plays too. I think I might have trick mine into it.

Outstanding, Cliff! I like it.

I like the outcome but I was surprised at your technique.

The outcome is purely good luck. the base and the board weren’t perfectly squared- Mostly because I didn’t have a good plan at the outset.
That rookie error was nearly catastrophic when it came to the edge routing.
Some of it was freehand to avoid routing out the MOP.
It’s primarily why the edge maple is burned and non- uniform.
Also figured out how to use tge table saw without creating projectiles along the way resulting in some less than perfect board squares.

Made more mistakes than I would like to admit

I have made so many mistakes here that I kinda have reached the point where I hate it for not being what it could have been, instead of loving it for what it is.
Sotra like a bad parent.
After countless coats and much wet sanding I reached the point of diminishing returns- So this one is done- And plans for the next one are underway.
