Build Thread: LeGeyt CLM - Carpathian Spruce and Koa

As many of you know, I play period music as a member of the Fab Florentines. Here's a recent head shot.

When I played Burton's instruments at SBAIC and discovered his penchant for marrying old world styling with modern design, I decided to commission a piece to allow me to lay down sweet lute leads and thumping bass lines at the same time.

Here's Burton with the prototype:

The scale length is not for the feint of heart.

Specs TBD but definitely going with a Hoffee case.

Ok, I lied. I was kicked out of the Fab Flor 3 years ago. I've actually commissioned a CLM (OM size plus a little more) based on the 2 very impressive CLMs I played at SBAIC. I really have no idea what the specs will be, though I do know I will incorporate a sound port, as I found them very effective on those two guitars.

Here are the 2 guitars from SBAIC to kick off the thread.

Oh great! I always wanted to hear Michael Hedges played with a Black Plague flair. :)

The more I look at "me" with that monstrositar I realize what it is really missing is a victrola horn off the back..... You know, just to balance out that long neck.

I also start to realize that I don't think it would fit in my shop!

I'm freaked out by thinking where would you buy strings. Or do you just take two normal strings and tie them together?

And Juston, are you wearing contact lenses now?

Col

PS Look forward to the build thread!

Congrats! I'm very excited for you. Before I bought Jackaroo's BRZ LeGeyt I thought long and hard about your new guitar. Mine is currently back with Burton getting a spa treatment, fingerstyle setup, fret dress, and a little elbow grease. Should be down here maybe end of next week. I'm also very excited for Burton that things are starting to happen for him, because he is extremely gifted, and a profoundly nice guy to boot. I just feel bad I've been pronouncing his last name incorrectly for about a year. :foreheadslap:

At long last, the construction of the Lute Bass begins.

Carpathian spruce top and koa back and sides. I'm pretty flush with mahogany at the moment so Burton and I did a little change-a-roo. I didn't create any kind of tonal goals for this guitar; I'm just going to let Burton voice it to his liking. He suggested Carpathian spruce, and I was an easy sell. I really like the Carpathian spruce top on my Brondel. And since we know that species of spruce all have a very consistent and predictable sound, I expect this set will sound exactly the same . . .

Burton is the best, I am impatient to see how this built will turn!

You were so much older then, Juston. You're younger than that now.

Great look wood set! I'm looking forward to experiencing this build vicariously.

CoolerKing 03-11-2021 06:34 AM

I think a lute bass is a great idea.

Wonder if Burton has shaved since that photoshop or did he grow a COVID hermit beard? 😂😂

Right...something about an aggressive mead habit and dancing the maypole without a, ahem, jerkin.
