Eddie Cochran "Twenty Flight Rock"
 

Last night, I listened to a John Lennon interview in which he said that he invited Paul McCartney to join The Quarrymen after hearing him sing and play (on guitar) an Eddie Cochran tune titled Twenty Flight Rock. I'd heard that story before and immediately wondered why I hadn't looked for that recording to have a listen. Since there's not much else to do now, I remedied that situation straight away and the video below is what I found. It's from a 1956 film with Jayne Mansfield titled The Girl Can't Help It.

I'm kinda slow with lyrics and I don't mind admitting that I didn't get the words the first time around. Pretty cool. A rockin' performance there by Mr. Cochran, in addition to the spectacularly top-heavy Ms. Mansfield. Don't miss the last line heard at the end of the video.

...cool stuff....he kinda looks like an Elvis that ain’t quite got the moves or the voice...but no slouch...love the guitar...

It's fun to see some of these old clips being rediscovered 50+ years later. Cochran may have been one of the first rockers to customize his guitar - he swapped out the stock neck pickup on his Gretsch for a p-90.

I always loved rockabilly. Always loved Eddie Cochran. He was fantastic. And outright cocky, on stage! I was fortunate years ago to grab a two-CD set of his recordings. I had some of his CDs in university, as well. Again, he was fantastic. Here's a line to one of the CD's I have from Cochrane.

Buddy Holly was another great artist from this genre. Sad they passed on, so young.

Wow that 'Town Hall Party' is a treasure - it is very rare to find 50's performances that weren't lip synced.
