Goodbye David Olney...
|
He died doing what he loved best which almost no one gets to do. Blessings to his family and good memories.

I actually find nothing comforting or reassuring about David having literally died while on-stage. He died on the road, removed from family, and far from home...and the audience now also will carry this difficult experience with them... I mention this not to be contrary, but to frame David’s death differently than the “he died with his boots on” (as a good thing) perspective. I see only tragedy here... |
David Olney dies on stage
Wow, this is really sad but for a man who truly loved to play and sing, perhaps not a bad way to go. It's like he just paused on stage and was gone. Never dropped the guitar, just gone. He was gifted and cool. RIP

I can't think of a better way to go...

I hadn't known of Mr. Olney until this sad news. It caught my eye because I knew a friend of mine was performing at the 30A Festival.
Here's his performance from earlier in the day: RIP, Mr. Olney! |

I can't decide if I feel more, "Well, if you're a musician, this is probably the way to go," and "uh, my parents are six years older than this guy."

This one hurts. The X Rays were regulars in the Triangle back in the 80s. A fine songwriter, a good guy, a great band. I was playing his latest CD the other day.
|
I read about his passing last night. I wasn't familiar with him or his music, but it seems that he died peacefully doing what he loved. R.I.P. David Olney.

I read the news late last night of his death. I'd never heard of him (I think I'd vaguely heard of his band the XRays). The bit I read mentioned a few of his songs, none of which I had any memory of either, though some of them appeared on albums that I'm pretty sure I've listened to all the way through.
The bit I read on his death linked this vlog from just over a month ago. He talks a bit about his touring life and he is intentionally generous in mentioning those connected with it. Over halfway in this clip he plays one of his songs, a sad and beautiful narrative song which represents his work as being at a fairly high level. Again: I'd never even heard of him. That's a commentary on talent and this big world now isn't it. (I've removed a point I had in this post, that on reconsideration I think is best made elsewhere) |
Just discovering this unique man via this thread! I'm very sorry for the loss......and certainly appreciate the words offered here on AGF.
Wonderful to learn he was a Rhode Island native! RIP, my good man!! |
I hadn't heard of him until a few years ago...
I was reading an article on one of my favorite musicians, Darrell Scott, and when asked who he looked up to in the business, he said: "How do you get better than David Olney?" So, I started checking him out and found him to be a gifted songwriter and musician... Truly sorry to hear of his sudden passing... |
I am very sorry to hear this.
I heard one song ... somewhere, and ordered every album he had made (some time ago). Then we heard that he was to do a concert .. in a school (!) somewhere to the east of London. I phoned to get tickets and found myself talking to the headmaster - who, it turned out was also a great fan of David's song writing. It was a fair drive - but we arrived early, bumped into the headmaster who invited us to dine with his family ... and David ! I'm drawn to writers who can "craft" a song - David Olney really crarfted his songs - you had to focus on the storyline ... a very clever man. He'll be missed. This is my humble version of one of his songs : |
