Emerald Guitar Specs

One of the processes I'm using in trying to justify another Emerald guitar or not, is to compare the specs of my present X7 and X20 to the new Emerald offerings.

So I put this chart together.

Not sure if it's helping much but I was surprised to see my X20's overall length is 1/2" longer than the X30.:D

Maybe this chart can help others.

I have never seen so many numbers and fractions in one place...

David Eastwood 06-23-2018 04:55 PM

I think the difference in X20 and X30 overall lengths is due to the X30 being 12 frets to the body instead of the X20's 14.

I think the proper justification is: your heart telling your head, "Hey, I talked it over with the fingers, and we need one of those!"

To paraphrase the justification I used to live by in my younger years: when choosing between two evils, I tend to go for the one I haven't tried, yet. Apply that to the Emeralds: pick one you haven't tried, yet. (Oh, there are no evil choices there.)

Is there going to be a test?

Ditto the 2017 X7 vs 2018 X7.

Spec lovers vs comedians. I've got to admit, we have good comedians here. :D I also like specs -- thanks 121!

Luckily answers are above...if correct.

A little surprised at the X10 being 1 11/16" nut when all others are 1 3/4"

Methos1979 06-24-2018 07:15 AM

I think the X7 body being ever so slightly larger and deeper than the previous iteration is making it my next guitar. Custom woody (of course) in cocobolo (of course) to match its big brother. Custom neck carve and 24.6" scale with K&K. On the fence only with the string spacing. The custom X20 I went with 2 1/4" but since then picked up a guitar with 2 5/16" and find I like that extra space.

Good job to the OP on the side-by-side specs. Very helpful.

Going for a bit more of an electric guitar cross over sorta thing I'm guessin'.

That's my thought, as well. I was surprised by that 1 11/16" nut width, then sat down and played my Taylor T5 for a while... that is a comfortable neck. The X10 is supposed to have a thinner neck profile as well. That would work well with the slightly narrower nut width.

With all the chit-chat before the unveiling, I was expecting an X10; thought it would simply be between the X7 and X20 in size. Then, the X7 grew a bit, and this X10 appeared... with size specs that are close to the X7, other than the neck. I think this guitar will be a different animal from the other two. I'm anticipating a great sounding acoustic that plays more like an electric... with some interesting plugged in options.

It will likely be controversial, considering that humbucker pickup for the second level pickup option. I am assuming there will be some way of blending the two pickups (from the info on Emerald's site).

A definite departure from the T5 (one of my favorite electrics, btw), with the 5 position switch; it looks like the X10 is a true acoustic that will allow some interesting electric tones... thus that "controversial" comment above. There are acoustic players that scorn the use of any pickup - this guitar looks to be one that embraces the plugged in sound.

I have mentioned here how much I enjoy the X7 plugged in. The X10... in the words of the philosophers The Pointer Sisters: "I'm so excited..."

I like how Alistair doesn't give us "what we expect."

I agree. I just wonder, with a different neck can it also be a Goldilocks acoustic? It seems to be Goldilocks size.

A lil something I came across in some Irish emails that somehow got sent to me a while back...
.
" The X10 is very similar to the X7 in size but with a full scale length and a slimmer more electric style neck. "
.
"The X10 has a stereo switch jack. When a mono cable is plugged in everything is blended onboard but with a stereo cable you get both pickups separately. very handy."
..

mot 06-24-2018 02:23 PM

The X7 scale length is changing (at least on the metric side). I like that. Maybe when it gets to about 624 or 625 mm I think I might grab one (assuming the leprechauns can keep the English scale constant this whole time). I figure that will take about another year or two given the 2 point trend I see above.

That is an interesting premise. Being able to blend onboard would be great. Are you saying with a stereo cable you could run to two different outputs?

I have used an A/B/Y pedal with my T5 to run it to an acoustic amp and an electric amp, but no way to blend it at the guitar, other than the 5 way switch.

Yes, a very interesting premise.

I agree with this. Wish the scale length was at least 24.5 inches. If it was, I would be seriously looking at ordering an x7. I really like the new specs otherwise.

I believe I am yes...oh and I had an early T5 and a couple Godins with both acoustic and electric pickups and one with the 13 pin midi.

I can confirm the stereo out, so yea, could run the humbucker to an amp or pedalboard and the piezo to the board etc, then mute one channel or have two volume pedals....lots to consider. As someone who leads worship and wouldn't mind throwing a quick electric switch in for a song or even just a chorus it really has been piquing my interest

I know Emerald does a 24.6" scale on the X20 (there is an upcharge) - I would imagine that is something they could do for you on an X7. Although I have to say that 24" scale is a good fit for my X7 (the slightly older, smaller version).

Thanks for pointing that out. I wonder which of 24" and 615mm (24.2") is accurate.

Either that or wait for the new, yet-to-be-announced X13 ;)

Long Jon 06-25-2018 08:01 AM

My X7 is already a pretty tight fit lengthwise in the gig bag, I s’pose you could squeeze another half inch in .... maybe.

I guess they could give you an X10 bag, but that would be a bit floppy.

I just had a chat session with Emerald, and he measured it out to 24.1" (which converts to a little over 612mm). As far as the upcharge goes, it would be $450 for a custom scale length.

Thanks for the info! I would love an x7 with a slightly longer scale length, but that upcharge probably puts it out of budget. Either way, I am looking forward to comparisons of the old vs new x7 when people start receiving their new ones.

You're in good company. I think there are a lot us us munching on popcorn waiting for the first comparisons to come in. At least we're hanging out in the right place.

I think I'm gonna need something more substantial than popcorn... 3 distinctly new models? :wild: Decisions, decisions.

I have a 24 3/4" scale X7 nylon -- slotted head stock is longer than steel string head stock, 13 frets to body gets back some length. Fits tightly in X7 gig bag, more tightly than my 24" scale X7 steel string. Don't know how that translates to new X7. The difference between those scales just isn't significant for me. I would (and may) go with standard 24" (+ a little?) new X7. :D 3 X7 guy!! -- would feel kramster-esk!
