NGD (New Gretsch Day) !!
 

I don’t think I’ve been this excited in a long time. I sold my J-45 and had narrowed down my choices until I arrived at the
Gretsch G6128T-TVP.

Besides it being a Japanese model, it had everything I wanted. Ebony board, pinned bridge, TV Jones pickups, Sperzel deluxe locking tuners, chambered (I’ve had a spinal fusion with hardware a few years back...this is a big plus), arched top, actual Bigsby, and orig HSC.

I bought it from an excellent seller on Reverb. Should be here by Weds of next week.

Looks like a fun guitar, and with it's ABR, and, high output TV Jones Powertrons, this is about as close will Gretsch to get to a les Paul style DuoJet.
I think this guitar could really round out your stable of Gretsches!

After cleaning her up, setting her up to my personal playing preference, and putting on new strings...all I can say is wow! This is my first Japanese Professional Series Gretsch. The fit/finish is superb. I couldn’t find a single thing to complain about.

The TV Jones Powertrons are very articulate. They’re fairly different (obviously) compared to my other three Korean mades that have Hi’lo trons and Blacktops. It’s hard to describe. The Powertrons seem hotter, and with a little more definition. Maybe a bit more articulate and focused...

I misquoted saying that the tuners were Sperzels. They’re actually Gotoh locking. Very smooth.

The Bigsby (rather than the Koreans “licensed by” Bigsby) is a bit smoother. The spring is less stiff than my Korean mades (I swapped them out for “Squishy springs” from Bill Brickwell). It holds tune extremely well. Even after a string change to .011’s, a neck tweak, and a setup.

I’m extremely pleased. The only “issue” is I don’t care for the tone switch. I’d of preferred a knob (I guess I could always put a tone pot in place of the switch) but, left in the middle position I get great tones and can tweak my amp a bit if necessary.

Having said that, it’s arrival confirmed the great quality and value of my older Korean models that have rosewood boards, and BT or Hi’los in them.

This Jet sold new for $2499. Is there THAT much difference between it and it’s Korean counterparts? In a word...no. Again, this validates the quality, and all around excellence of the Korean models.

But, are there enough subtle differences to necessitate owning a Japanese Gretsch? To me, yes. Of course I bought used and got a very good price so it was a no brainer. It certainly fills a gap in my stable and brings a “dream guitar” into reality.

Overall, so far, I’m highly pleased and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Yet, it also gave me a whole new appreciation for its Korean stable mates. More to come as I have more opportunity to play her further.

Finally, to those who may be considering entering the Gretsch world...I don’t see how you could go wrong. And, if you had any questions Steve is spot on with his descriptions and his personal experience has been very beneficial in my quest.

Congrats. That’s a gorgeous guitar. I’m three months or so into my first Gretsch (a 5422) and yeah, there’s something about them....

A Gretsch guitar has PTony all wound up for what, the 3rd time.?? 4th time.?? Could it really be the 5th time.?? How many Gretsch do you own.?? Always room for another.....;) Love it.
