Where do I find beginner player fingerstyle tabs with melody?
 

Hi folks!

Been playing guitar for about 3 years now and have recently been looking for fingerstyle tabs to learn to play for my level of play - I would say I'm a intermediate player and basically self taught from online websites and youtube. :)

Have been doing patterned picking (classical and travis) for a while now and now would like to progress to songs with melody built in - for lack of a better term (what do you call those tabs anyway with melody in it?)

In my search, it seems its hard to find them with my level of play. Most I've found are for the experts.

www.lickbyneck.com is a great source but even their beginner tabs are not that easy for me.

www.guitar-in-a-nutshell.com is great but limited in song choices. Ive tried his "Hey Jude" tab and it's perfect for my level of play. Would like to find more of that but songs in the 70s (chicago, bread, america, JT, etc)or later era but somehow they are hard to find

Anyone know of where to find these beginner player fingerstyle tabs with melody built in?

Similar position here but not at it so long...

I found Will Fly's site most helpful... there's separate tab's, music and videos for many, many tunes..

About 10 or so appear to be aimed at beginners with good 'how to' videos accompanying them... For me found it best to download both pdf and matching videos (off Utube) and work offline...

Acoustic Fingerstyle has a lot of 'stuff' under 'Fingerstyle Collections' some for beginners... a lot not though.. Personally I like a example mp3 rather than just midi for whatever I'm learning... some at this site have them and some not...

There's also a wealth of 'stuff' here http://justinguitar.com/en/FO-000-Folk.php as well... if you want into blues then the solo blues CD's are worth purchasing ... there's an hell of a lot of bits here, you can get waylaid...

For me Will's combination of tab & videos is pulling me along just fine with questions and theory sorted from Justin's site...

OK, even a lot of the beginner and intermediate arrangements are pretty challenging, but you are almost certain to find at least a few things you like here.

This looks interesting, but am I the only one that is unable to download any of the "Beginner and Intermediate Guitar" .tef files? The Advanced, Chet Adkins, and Banjo .tef files all DO seem to be available.

There's a note at the top of the page that says the tabs are for private students only. I don't know if that means they are for "private use only" or if actually have to be an active student of Mr. Baker's in order view them. If the later is true, then it seems silly to have them listed on the public website.

How about sites that have plenty of tabs for jazz standards?

I think it's more than fair that he keeps the beginners for only for his paying students. It's an amazing gift that the others are available at all. There are over 460 total tabs for the Advanced and the Chet Atkins folders alone. I didn't bother with the banjo folder.

I downloaded both pages a few minutes ago and will slowly listen to find a few melodies that interest me and then pitch the rest. A very nice site, IMO.

For numerous tabs of all genres, for both flatpickers and fingerstyle folks, you can check out the MySongBook archive (http://www.msb-forever.com/). The tabs are in Guitar Pro format, which means you can use (and print) them from either Guitar Pro, or the freely downloadable TuxGuitar (for Windows, Mac, etc). Thousands of tabs... :D

Hmmm... this did not used to be the case. They were all available before (for quite a few years).

I guess the lesson here is that if you find a great collection like this, download all the pieces that might ever be of interest to you when you can. Websites are not forever.

Incidentally, if you get the full version of TablEdit (not an expensive program), it will read Midi files, which would allow you to make tablature (and standard notation if desired) for these arrangements. You'd likely need to do some editing (moving some notes to different strings) to make tablature that was fully playable, though TablEdit does a pretty good job of creating reasonably playable tablature from the start).

Please don't misunderstand me... I certainly can appreciate the time and effort that goes into developing the arrangements and creating the tabs that go along with them. I certainly bare them no ill will for preferring to see some income for their efforts. (I currently subscribe to totallyguitars.com and jamplay.com, and find that they are well worth the investment.)

My only point was that if there is no way for anyone to get the tabs, it seems silly to even have them listed on the site. If there was a way for people to register and pay for them, then that would make a lot more sense. Right now, it's just a large list of dead end web links.

It's not really a big deal. I've got more than enough to keep me busy right now. It just looked interesting and I thought it might be one more good resource to keep handy. It's definitely great that the advanced stuff is still there, but I think that might be a little beyond me right at this moment.
