That's some spectacular Brazilian. Look forward to seeing it finished.

I always enjoy Olson builds, keep the updates coming.

hreboredo 05-02-2010 04:50 PM

That wood looks amazing! Why are you letting Jim keep some by doing a cutaway :-). Have him send you the scrap for a coaster if he doesn't use it in the trim.

Hi Kent, what exactly is spectacular about this piece? Personally I hope it sounds better than it looks.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the beauty?

Assuming you are serious (I am not really sure how your "wink" was intended)
this is actually an issue that has been discussed on this forum quite a bit.

I won't hi-jack the thread by opening up the issue of this type of "cut", but there are some who see it as beautiful, and other more traditional types see it as poor quality wood for a guitar.

Everyone has their perspective on quarter sawn and flat sawn. I looked at well over 100 options and this was exactly the figured with spider web that I was looking for. I honestly think that this is the most attractive Brazilian, but others prefer the straight grained dark stuff. That other straight stuff is just for my liking. So I guess that is the benefit of doing a build, you get to build to your preference. If you look at many of the Brazilian older Martins, many have this figuring and those guitars are still spectacular.

One of the nicest backs I have ever seen is the one on this guitar built by Jim Olson...and is behind my selection of this set of Brazilian:

Anyway, I am really excited for this dread.

I am lucky to have such a beautiful piece....Jim will really make this one sing.

Keith,
congratulations and looking forward to your thread. I also spotted the Brazilian neck planks at the bottom of the stack behind your back wood on the second photo :)

I think that is just darker mahogany. He has only made 4 brazilian necks ever (#1301 was the 4th) so he doesn't make those up. That said, he told me mine is already made!:D

cpabolting 05-05-2010 04:57 AM

I am pretty stoked about this dread. I have an Olson dread already and it is my favorite of all my guitars to play. This one will really be killer.

K III 05-05-2010 11:06 AM

Keith,

you need to stop posting without pictures. It's against Forum rules :D

Billy Boy 05-05-2010 02:38 PM

Beautiful brazilian...congratulations on what looks to be another awesome Olson build...

cpabolting 05-06-2010 08:09 AM

Thanks....I am sure the progress will be slow for a while..he is putting together a batch to start working on.

blues2rock 05-06-2010 09:33 AM

CPA, when did your addiction to custom builds start?:)

Steve Kinnaird 05-06-2010 08:53 PM

Keith, that back is truly amazing.
That very grain pattern is one of the reasons I like Brazilian.
You're going to have a honey of a guitar.

Steve

I looked at a lot of sets of Brazilian and still wasn't finding what I wanted....so I sent a picture of what I was looking for....and as soon as I saw it I knew in a flash.

Honey of a guitar is the truth! It will be the big brother guitar to my one I got in February #1301:

The appointments will be identical except it will have an Adirondack top.

You're fast, man! Just got my pictures 10 minutes ago:)

I really like how Jim lines up his classes. And it is always fun to see the peacocks in there, like the pink ivory and the pernambuco and whatever the white one is.

cpabolting 05-28-2010 07:06 AM

So which one is yours? The pink one?? LOL

You've seen my wood, mine is the unfanciest of all and can even hide in the EIR's :)

Some like to color within straight lines and some like to color outside the lines.

They say our wood is a function of our personality...I tend to go for those with the more attractive figure...maybe you like yours like a carpenters dream...straight as a board and never been...woops. :D:D:D
